Advocating for policy change is really very simple. Letters, e-mails and phone calls can be particularly effective in influencing legislators views. Make sure to contact only your representatives and discuss only one bill or issue at a time.

Write a Letter

Make sure to use the proper salutation, for example;

 

The Honorable (Full Name of State Representative/Senator)

Dear (Representative/Senator) last name,

I am writing in support of SB# or HB# to allow police officers to carry and administer epinephrine auto-injectors. Since police officers are often the first on the scene, it is vital that they have the necessary tools to respond to an anaphylactic emergency.

I respectfully ask you to vote to support bill #, a law that will keep your constituents safe in the event of an emergency.

Most elected officials will have a submission page rather than an e-mail address on their webpage where you can personalize or copy and paste your message.

Sample Message:

As a constituent, I am asking you to support Bill #. I believe it is vital to allow police officers to carry and administer epinephrine during an anaphylactic emergency. 

Please give your support Bill # and vote Yes when it comes to the floor this session.

Phone Call

Calling is very effective and is a proven way to enact change. When you call, a legislative assistant will answer the phone. Make a clear call to action and let them know you do not need a response.

Sample Script:

Hello, my name is ____. I live in city/town and I am a constituent of Senator/Representative name. I am strongly in support of police officers  carrying and administering epinephrine during an anaphylactic emergency. I would like the Senator/Representative to vote Yes in support of Bill #. Thank you.

 

 

 

Witness Slip

 

A Witness Slip communicates a person or group's position on a particular bill in the State of Illinois. A Witness Slip can be filed by individuals on behalf of themselves, or on behalf of an organization. A Witness Slip can be filed for any bill. Click here to file a witness slip.

Please follow the steps below to file a witness slip.

  1. Fill out the Identification section with your information. For the Firm/business or agency and Title fields, write "self" unless you are authorized by a company or business to use their name on the witness slip.

  2. The Representative section: if you are not authorized to appear on behalf of any group, fill in NA or "self".

  3. Under position, select PROPONENT

  4. Complete the Testimony section, check the "Record of Appearance Only" box. This will allow your position on the piece of legislation to be known without having to physically appear.

  5. Type what is displayed in the CAPTCHA box.

  6. Click in the box next to "I Agree to the ILGA Terms of Agreement"

  7. Click Create (SLIP)

  8. You are done.
